    Description

The founder John Sowerby began his venture in 1846, called Gateshead Stamped Glass Works, later in 1852 changing to Sowerby Ellison Glass Works. As time progressed and styles changed, Sowerby and Co continued to design and market products popular with the consumer. At the height of the art deco era, the company produced sleek modern pieces such as this beautiful centerpiece bowl. As pictured, the British registration number is visible on the inside, RGD No 808160. This particular design was patented on November 23, 1935. Through my research, I have not found the name of this fancy pattern. The center of the bowl has a beautiful flower design with a series of paneled arches circling the midsection, a band of roses on the outside of the top rim. Quite substantial in size and weight, the bowl measures 12” across the downward flared rim and stands 3” tall. As expected, the bowl reacts brightly in the presence of UV light. After thorough examination, I can find no chips, cracks, damage or repairs. I will mention that on the bottom rim minor roughness can be felt in a couple of spots. Evidently when these pieces were produced at the factory, this bottom rim was rough coming from the mold thus had to be factory ground. Several small spots on the inside edge of the bottom rim feel slightly rough due to this grinding process. Not an issue whatsoever. I will also mention several interior bubbles visible; very common with this type of glass from the 1930s. A fantastic example to work into any deco or mid century decor. Multiple pictures accompany the listing.  Please view all pictures as they are considered part of the description.
Please check back to my listings often as I will be posting numerous fine examples of glass, pottery and porcelain in the near future.
    Thank you.
